Oxytocin, often referred to as the "bonding hormone," plays a pivotal role in fostering social bonds and enhancing overall well-being. This hormone is released in response to various forms of physical touch, such as hugging, cuddling, and massage, leading to increased feelings of trust, relaxation, and reduced stress.

In the context of yoga, incorporating hands-on assists can be another option to stimulate oxytocin release. The Rubber Band Method® (RBM) emphasizes intentional, consensual, and anatomically informed touch, which helps deepen the yoga experience by fostering greater grounding, stretch, and ease. This tactile interaction can enhance the yoga experience by promoting a sense of community and connection. Given that loneliness has been identified as a leading public health concern, the increase of oxytocin through meaningful touch may serve as an antidote by reinforcing social bonds and reducing feelings of isolation.

Regular participation in yoga classes that offer RBM hands-on assists can contribute to overall well-being through the benefits provided by safe touch. Research has demonstrated that physical touch can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support emotional health.

  • Stress Reduction: "Oxytocin helps lower cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone, leading to a calmer state of mind." (dignityhealth.org)

  • Enhanced Social Bonds: "Physical touch increases feelings of trust and connection, strengthening relationships within the yoga community." (en.wikipedia.org)

  • Improved Mental Health: "Regular oxytocin release is associated with decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression, contributing to overall emotional well-being." (verywellmind.com)

By attending classes that incorporate the Rubber Band Method®, individuals not only deepen their yoga practice but also engage with the profound benefits of intentional touch, fostering a greater sense of connection and well-being.
